I hived my very first package on Saturday about 6:30 PM. Sunday was damp in the morning, but not really rainy. I saw a lot of activity Sunday afternoon maybe 3 PM-ish; many bees flying in and out.

Since then, I've had to work late, and haven't gotten home till after dark. I take a quick peek out the window at the hive before I leave for work, but I don't see any bees; of course, it's about 8am then, and it's been unseasonably cold here in Atlanta. It's 63 degrees right now according to weather.com, 67 according to my outdoor thermometer and it's overcast. I'm working from home and I see zero activity at the hive. I'm going to go out to the hive a little later; what should I be looking for? I know I'm not supposed to disturb the hive so soon after installing the package, but should I at least check the hivetop feeder? I put a gallon of syrup in it on Saturday. If I shouldn't peek inside, should I be on the lookout for certain sounds, smells, etc?

Any help you can provide would be appreciated!

If the hive has feed and the queen cage is set for release I wouldn't be too concerned. I would be in Sat or Sunday and make certain the queen has been released and hopefully look for some drawn comb and eggs. You should notice a decrease in feed and some activity by guard bees at the entrance in the mean time.

I may stir up another ruckus with this, but you say it's about 65, give or take a few degrees.. If it drops from around 80 to 65, you will see very little activity. If it rises from 45 to 65, you will see an explosion of activity. In your case, I wouldn't worry about it until the temp. gets back to normal.

There was a little more activity this afternoon, but then it started to rain. Thanks for the reassuring posts; I'll open the hive Sunday morning and make sure the queen is out of the cage.

Here in Vermont 65 degrees is a hot day! There is activity at the entrance of my hives when it is 50.
