My dad takes care of the bees although he is not as crazy as me about them. we have a year round flow in Punjab(state in northern INDIA) (except july -aug the rainy season) they should be doing fine. one of my hives died out due to a poor queen(became a drone layer) in winter of 2005 so i joined it with the other hive). the other one absconded in coming spring 2006(reasons unknown ants maybe). here comes the surprise! both of my hives were repopulated by swarms in the next month!(one in end feb and other in mid march! oh how happy i was. i requeened the second hive with a purchased queen she was very old looking (wings worn out , dull colour) both of them were growing leaps and bounds when i last inspected them in june! now my dad gives them sugar solution 1:1 to tide over the shortage period but september is here so.. i believe they'l be fine one of them no.2 is a bit darker than no.1(with origional queen) we do not have carniolan race as yet in India. and we do not have that serious a problem with mites(keeping my fingers crossed at that). i plan to stay here for a couple of years and do intend to keep bees here as soon as i can. may be next year. hopefully HE will show me the way as HE did last year. i'l thank HIM always for that..

Hi Balhanapi,

I think you may be related to my husband. He is from Nepal, however, his Father is Punjab. His Mother is from Pokhara. Anyway, glad to see you here. Welcome to the USA. I hope you can learn alot here and perhaps share some of your knowledge about beekeeping practices in your region. Punjab is beautiful and I can't wait to go there someday.

I am always fascinated with honey practices in India and Nepal, especially Nepal. I just received some Nepalis honey and I swear it tasted like Neem. One of our friends talks about his bees...they are in his house, in the walls. They like it this way too. Then there's the guys who will climb several hundred feet to reach a mountain side to obtain honey...such bravery.

I hope you like it here. Take care,

Cyndi Singh

Hi Cyndi, hello everybody! ya punjab is a beautiful state among the wealthiest states of India. There beekeeping is a side business for farmers.(there r full fledged commercial beekeepers too who migrate etc) we have a year round flow(except rainy season july-aug). Honeybees r a part of life there. Everybody knows about them almost everybody can tell the difference btw a honeybee and a wasp(yellow jacket) they have different names in local dialect! neighbours do not complain of bees in your backyard and there r no frantic calls to the fire dept if somebody has bees in his/her yard they just avoid them and wait for them to take off or somebody is always ready to help in their own locality! we have all the four kinds of honeybees in punjab so you can well imagine.. (the fifth kind lives in high reaches of himalayas) plus we have a huge agricultural university(Punjab Agricultural University) which is dedicated in establishing honeybees as a livelihood/hobby for anybody interested. I moved to Pittsburgh 3 months back i am in an apartment right now, i plan to move into a house next year so that i can keep bees in my backyard!! i have a very supportive wife (touch wood ;) ) she lets me do whatever i want. I hope my future landlord lets me and my neighbours dont object! is that too much to ask? Well lets see.. tongue.gif

Thanks everybody for the welcome smile.gif
