Hey Guys

I got a wax tube for fastening foundation in (I believe it was Michael that said it was faster than nailing?) & am unsure how to use it. Do you leave the wedge in & just wax the foundation after putting it in the groove? Remove the wedge & just wax to the top bar? Just want to know how to "do it right." smile.gif

Lew - I leave the wedge in, slide the foundation strip into place, then wax along. If wax runs down into the groove that is a good thing - with enough wax it will seal the foundation in solidly. I add enough wax to form a bead (like caulk) along the outside edge, then flip the frame and repeat.

Then again, I also learned those plungers the pharmacy gives away make excellent wax appliers. On some frames I was given with the wedge detatched, I nailed it into place like normal, then waxed the foundation in.

I also leave the wedge in place and now order frames without the wedge cut.

One thing I have noticed is that you can get the wax too hot. You want it just a few degrees above the melt point (whatever that is) or it can melt through the foundation or thin it out enough to break.

Now with wired small cell foundation available I guess I have to go back to wedges.

Good luck Lew......... It's kinda fun waxing, at least the first hundred or so. ;)

It only works on wedge frames if the wedge is still attached. It works best on grooved top bars. I just leave the wedge in. I've never tried it without the wedge and I don't think I would trust it nor do I know how you would get it waxed well.

Why? Why not just put the wired foundation in and wax it instead of nailing it? Does it have hooks and you have to bend them over the wedge?
