I was wondering what type of swarm traps to use? The paper mache (sp?) ones or will a nuc work out? How would you hang a nuc from a tree?
Any suggestions?

Chef (spell checker works on bee source) A nuc will be fine with old comb, hanging it I don't know, duct tape, rope, put eye screws in the 4 corners and tie 2 pieces of rope to them and another knotted around the two (it will slide to center) throw one end over a branch and hoist it up. Just an idea.
Use your imagination. What ever works.

See Silver, I am not as imaginative as you. Remember the hive stand you gave me a year or so back?? I LOVE that thang. Works awesome!

how do you make "spell check" work?
I keep having to use google (which by the way is great for spell checking)

Spell check is an add on in explorer.
The check mark with the abc over it on your tool bar.
You click on it and it goes through what you've typed and offers spelling suggestions when it finds a misspelled word.

FireFox rules!! Death to IE!!!
I rotate Nuc boxes for traps. They have good stink and are a good size.

one really nice thing about linux is you can get it to run off a cd
you download it and burn it on a cd and then boot off it
you get to try it and play with it without loadinging it on your PC or changing your PC in any way
get one version here
http://www.knoppix.org/
the downside of this is you can't save anything (the cd isn't writeable)
the upside is its absolutely impossible to get a virus (the cd isn't writeable)
get it and play with it
it's not as user friendly as Micro$oft but you can see if you want to load it up for real

I get far fewer spybots, spyware, etc using FireFox. It is without a doubt safer to use than IE.

My server, Earthlink, comes with pop-up-blocker,spam blocker, virus blocker (Comcast has the same) in addition I run AVG Free, and mirco soft spyware blocker.

Hmmm! And I was hoping to get some new clues on swarm traps. Is Bill Gates a beekeeper?

There is better free virus software out there. I used to run AVG and now run Avast. Avast is far superior IMO. Much more automatic updating.
The "last straw" from AVG is that I got a worm dispite having AVG. Avast found the worm, quarantined it, and killed the little bassturd.

I've never gone smaller than a five frame deep nuc but they worked. Some of it depends on how accessable it is to you and how accessable it is to others. If you may not get back for some time the advantage of the paper mache ones is you don't have as much invested if they get destroyed by kids throwing rocks etc. The disadvantage is you have to do a cut out. The advantage to a box with frames is you don't have to do a cutout.

The exact same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. I switched to Avast and am happy and clean!

Firefox? Linux? What kind of swarm traps are these? I thought they were for computers.

OK, back to the original question, I am using 5 frame nucs as well as regular hive bodies.
I find the greates adventure is in finding lemongrass for the nucs.

My single hive cast a swarm yesterday and I was able to put in a nuc box that I had just made. This is the second this season. I missed the first one. The single hive was one I removed from my house last year. She has really had a lot of brood. The original hive still has a lot of bees. I wish I had been able to catch the original queen when she swarmed about two weeks ago.
