View Full Version : Checking for queens in swarm hives

One of my hives issued a swarm two weeks ago Thursday and an afterswarm two weeks ago Sunday, so today I went into both swarms and the original hive to check status of queens/brood. Both the swarm and afterswarm are doing admirably, but I'm a little worried about the original hive. Lots of bees and couldn't find the queen. There are a lot of paltry, broken down queen cells still in the hive and although there is quite a bit of capped brood in good formation on 3 sides of frame, there is also an equal amount of capped drone cells, not only at the bottom of the frames, but also toward the top, directly below the honey/pollen arc. It's also in good, tight groups; not spotty like it is with laying workers. Should I chalk this up to a new queen still working to "get it right" and give her another week? Or should I be looking to requeen? The bees seem neither apprehensive nor sluggish, which leads me to believe they think she's okay, but. . .opinions?

It can take weeks for a new queen to show up laying.

I would place a frame with eggs in the brood box,if they build queen cells you have no queen.

Odds are it's a virgin that is not laying yet. It takes at least two weeks before I would expect to see any eggs and bad weather can slow that down even more. The capped drones were there before this virgin emerged.

But the cheap insurance is to put a frame with eggs in and then IF they ended up queenless (which can certainly happen) they have the resources to deal with it.
