Sometimes, I like to go ut to the hives durning the winter and knock on the side of the deep and put my ear up to listen.
However, I am knocking but sometimes cant hear a thing. Should I really hit slap the hive to get something to hear?

??
It may be something to try with a modified observation hive.
I do the same and sometimes don't get a response at all. It's nice to hear they're alive sometimes, but don't know if it bothers the cluster too much.

Since the tailgaiter section has been closed, I have a question for you.
Can you recomend a good begin/intermediate book on decorative candy making?
I've been looking for one and having a hard time. I'm just looking to play with it a bit, but most books seem too elementary or don't include the basic info and just have some recipe steps and design pics.
Thx.
Sorry to but in on your question.

Ribster:
Well, this all depends on how much you understand sugar. If you think you really have a good understanding of sugar, than I can recomend a few books for you. However, I woudld say that one needs to have a good understanding of how sugar works. I recomend Candymaking for dummies. It is straight forward and does a pretty good job.
Also, you need to understand chocolate and how it acts. A good book is Candy Making Basics.
If you truely are ready to move up and udnerstand sugar and chocolate, try The Ultimate Candy Book : More than 700 Quick and Easy, Soft and Chewy, Hard and Crunchy Sweets and Treats.
Its a fun fun fun book.
Let me know if you need help at all.

I use a Stethoscope to listen to the hive. It is easier on the ear in winter.

I'm with MC but I'm also an EMT. Not sure i'd go out and purchase an $80 stethoscope to listen to hives. Probably should but I don't have a lot of money.
Anything less expensive is a toy. Don't waste your $$$$.

Hey guys--I gotta use a stethoscope in the summer to hear! Everyone says I'm hard of hearing and I say they are not talking loud enough and just mumbling! smile.gif

Gee Ribster... you might try writing one smile.gif

Oh phew. I thought I was nuts, up at the yard, putting my stethoscope on the hives. I was going to try the "cough" test but decided otherwise..

Ribster,
First, why put this in the middle of another thread? Second, why post it twice? Third, why not post it in "wanted to buy" instead of the bee forum or the beekeeping 101? Fourth, you have been edited now, but I'm not sure who you were insulting, the emotional people who were posting to the tailgater or the generous man, Barry, who provides these forums at a loss of time and money, out of the goodness of his heart. But either one, you should be more respectful of.
