Package bees arrived in Lynchburg today! We have a Dadant branch here and I picked up my bees. Its raining today, so I am going to wait until this afternoon hopefully for a break in the rain to get them in there.
Would there be an advantage to using a top feeder instead of an entrance feeder with my new hive? I have never used one before, but it was recommended to me....
Also, how do you know if maurauding bees have been in one of your hives.
I'M SO EXCITED!!!

Yes. An entrance feeder is like putting out a sign saying "rob me". Try putting the entrance feeder jar on top of the hole in the inner cover. with some screen or a board to cover the gap left over and a box to make room for the jar with the lid on top of that.

Robbers hover a lot and seem to be trying to find a way in. Wrestling on the landing board is the best evidence.

Hi,
I use home made feeders cost about 89p each made of plastic, I got mine for the diy store they are used for holding paint or any kind of liquid you want,
The lids fit very tight and I havent had any that have leaked, they hold about 2 ¾L of syrup and you can make as many holes in them as you want or restrict the number with a bit of tape as the pic.
I put them on top of the crown board and use an empty super. Coz the lids are flush fitting I put some 5mm sticks under them so the bee can get easy access.

Electric
I made a 4 quart holder that fits on top of my inner cover and put a super body around it. Makes for a real easy job to refill. Come by and take a look.
