I've just browsed Lusbans "back to bio" and this all sits well with reason. I may have missed it but I find little evidence to back what you say. It is easy for a "bio" person like me to follow your sound solution(I'm a new-bee who likes to read when its cold out). I like what I hear from you but would it be fool-hardy for a beginner to endeavor this 4.9 switch? Is this a hobbiest possibility or do I need a couple dozen colinies to make it succeed?

Well, you don't say how many colonies you have. Maybe only one. But many with only one are trying the switch. or if you have only one colony, try adding another and starting it completely on 4.9 and watch.
Then if you like what you see, you can change the other colony over easily by grabbing a few drawnout combs from the 49er colony and shaking down in the following spring the other and giving the queen an instant place to lay.

Mike, I am going back into keeping a few bees - had a severe heart attack in 1984 and necessitated eleminating heavy lifting. Going to begin with swarms on 4.9mm foundation and open, screened bottoms. If there is any chance that 4.9mm foundation will help eleminate even a few mites I am willing to give it a try. Roy
