In the fall, I remove the #5 and
#16 frame and install a solid wood follower board in their place.
I then place a second deep hive body on top for the bees to put
up stores for winter as you would with a conventional hive. This
keeps the bees from clustering into an end without the ability
to move up which result in dead bees from starvation. I haven't
tried over-wintering with just the bottom 20 frames but I would
think the bees would do fine in a warmer climate. |
