Dave,
The idea was to prick the larvae
with a pin to leave a hole the size of a
varroa mite. Then one is not only selecting for hygienic behavior,
but perhaps bees that notice items in the hive the size of the
varroa mite. In the hives chosen with this trait, actual video
footage shows bees biting the mites as they find (notice) them.
As I told Chris, 85-95% mite-free hives have been established.
