You'll need to do something for sure. Partly depends on your climate, but proping the lid without an inner cover is not the best idea.... too much heat could be lost. Would suggest either getting an innercover, and then proping the lid above that with a pencil or something... if not, the drilling a small hole to the side of the handle in the front would eliminate part of the problem as well. Keep it simple. Just make sure that the hive is facing away from your wind side, usually the west or North for us in the mid-west.
