Dave,
No I do not think the bees
are trained, but SELECTED for NOTICING the
varroa. This was accomplished by combining hygienic behavior
traits
(killing the larvae) and the pin hole (which was .5mm, to see
if the bees
could be selected to notice the hole, and thereby notice the
varroa mite).
The experiment was successful, in that the bees selected do chew
up the
mites and clean up the colony..up to 95% mite free.
