Subject: what does a wax moth look like?
Greetings,
A newbie here again...
I opened up the hive last week to check on their progress and
in addition
to there being a LOT of moisture on the top board (even with
venting the
hive), there were 3 slugs and a moth. The slugs, I was surprised
to see,
but since it's so damp, not entirely surprised. They were along
the edge
of the box, not on the frames. The moth alarmed me, however.
I tried to
get it out of the box, but it went back down between the frames
(and the
wind was coming up and it was getting dark so I didn't feel like
I could
take the supers apart). I have NO idea what a wax moth looks
like, so am
wondering if this was one of those buggers. Since I'm not using
any chems
(except the Apistan this year, since it's the first year package
bees and
they're not regressed yet), what shall I do to treat/ prevent
wax
moths? My poor bees have had a rough year and I hate to think
they've got
another disaster to deal with. They were looking great a couple
weeks ago,
but a bit more sluggish this past week. I will look in the hive
again this
weekend, when we're due for some sunny weather, and do a complete
look
around at all the frames. But any thoughts are appreciated.
And should I
put some grease patties in? I haven't done that yet and wonder
if I should
for trachael mites (that is what the patties are for, yes?).
thanks,
Julia in Elk River, CA
