Subject: Wing veins
Taking advantage of a wet and
windy Sunday afternoon (lots of leaves & twigs
plenty of small branches and baby trees and the odd big branch
down) I peered
at a few wings. I used a 10x binocular stereo microscope. I
was able to
look at the veins for the cubital index and gauge by eye indices
of "just
under 2" , "just over 1.5" and "about half
way between". Do we need to be
any more accurate than that for a field test?
I also tried it with a 4x watchmaker's
eyeglass and although I could see the
veins clearly it wasn't quite good enough to make those guesstimates.
I may buy a 10x loupe when I
go the the National Honey Show. It would be
more portable than the microscope and so would allow a genuine
test in the
field. Can anyone tell me the guide price?
