Re: How do you tell diseases apart

Dee,

"and no one talks about co-mingled cases either of
AFB and EFB both, nor do they discuss para foul brood."

Now this falls into my thoughts again!

I have read that if Melissococcus pluton is present in quantity then it inhibits all other bacteria from multiplying - hence the lack of rancid odors in brood frames infected with "E.F.B." A.F.B. being associated with odors due to secondary infections.

So, if there is apparent mixing of E.F.B. and A.F.B. in a hive and the above is true, it suggests that the E.F.B. is not E.F.B. (more strictly M.pluton infection) but some thing resulting in the production of symptoms classically assigned to E.F.B.

Alot of work still to be done - presumably made easier with the use of D.N.A. tracing techniques. Just need the right person and the money to come together. Make a great Ph.D. thesis!

Agreed that the hive and impinging environment are in a tightly bound system - and that linked events will have profound visible AND less apparent consequences.

Science relies on simple and clear laws, the people who study the science cannot know all or have the time to comprehend. Resulting in individuals specialized in narrow subject areas.

This has allowed in the past the development of techniques and treatments that often do more harm than good when viewed from a wide point of view. Now there is at least the individuals in position of influence voicing the opinion that holistic positions have to be taken when dealing with a problem - terminology used - call it what you will!

These individuals, academic or not are under much pressure to conform when their approach is not yet recognized.

They, to my mind need support - and if that comes by "antedotal" evidence being produced - so be it!

Most of my bees are dead or dying. Insecticides being shown to mainly be responsible according to the researchers - as a plain simple beekeeper, I cannot myself point the finger of proof!

But trying to obtain "the normal" system to accept responsibility is impossible even though the "independent sections" have furnished proof with protocols that have been accepted by all.

In this case, it then comes down to the stronger lobby - and beekeepers against the other sections of the agricultural industry count for little.

Moral of the mail is:

E.F.B; what is E.F.B. and don't place hives near treated sunflowers!
