Hi Clay

I use raw linseed oil, it penetrates well and does not produce a skin.
Although porous items may need several coats initially.

The time between re-coating is variable, all my hive parts and nucs come
back into the workshop (cellar) whenever they need maintenance and they get
a coat before they go back into service.

Or if they look as if they need a coat of oil, they are brought out of the
field to receive it.

I am guessing a bit about what the "average" would be, but I reckon 5 years
would not be far from the mark.
