Hi,
I have caught swarms in august
and had them winter very well. It's May you
can still set up a hive and have them winter. Many beekeepers
don't get
nuc's until 1st week of May in NY. If you were starting a package
of bees I
doubt you would have made any early dandy honey anyways. "
Usually" over
wintered colonies produce much of this honey. If you wait to
long (June-
July) you just won't get any surplus honey (maybe!) yet you can
have a hive
ready to for next year. You could split that hive and have two.
Get the
bees try starting them on 4.9 foundation this year if you feel
you can't get
surplus honey (or both). I believe they can produce surplus if
you get them
in a week or two. Remember it take 21 days for workers to hatch
(not
always). Get them this year bees must adapt to their climate.
There's no
time like the present!
