Subject: cute pic, couldn't resist
Not specifically relevant to
discussions, but the owner of the land
where I set up my hives took some pictures of my daughter as
I was
getting things ready for installing my packages. These show
her playing
around the full packages with intense interest.

For update on my Langstroth
hive: I installed the new queen Friday. I
went back Wednesday to trim out some misdrawn comb and remove
the queen cage. Again I saw no sight of the old queen. I got
a better look at
some of the comb (it was actually before sunset when I made it
out there
this time) and saw some larvae I'm guessing were a week or less
old;
still no capped worker brood. I also found the new queen --
at the
center of a tight over-enthusiastic wad of workers. She seemed
to still
be alive but I'm concerned that this is what balling looks like.
Anywas, I figure I'll let them try to get their act together
a bit and
if they aren't behaving in 2 weeks I'll dump them in the field
to
bolster the other colonies. A laying worker wouldn't be accepted
into a
queenright hive under those circumstances would it?
