Have you considered solar powered electric fence material ? (

moisture is required for return pass. Or sheet metal beneath
the hive ).
Cost effectiveness questionable. Entrance protection against
small mammals:
Carpet tack strips . Can be left permanently. Electric fence
highly labor
intensive because of elevation variations but reusable . Your
problem is
primarily the return pass since I assume the ambient conditions
are dry.
Another idea is a flatbed or other trailer serving as bee house
whereby
the entrances are above ground with protective gimmicks incorporated
in the
" Bee house ".
