Subject: Re: Small Hive Beetle
Hi to all
Rel SHB
Eric's thoughts on the placement of hives has sound reasoning,
until
proven not to work.
I have thought about this some time ago.
Here again the criteria is HOW the beetles colonize, Flying or
crawling.
If crawling , I would definitely place the BB off the ground
and the
legs of the platform into cans ( Containers) with soapy water
.I assume
that the breathing means of the beetles is also via spiracles
. "Wet "
water does not have this "Surface" tension and penetrates
, thus
suffocating insects .
I did this with an ant invasion in S Cal.
I have posted the formula of soapy water on this list before.
Then there is this off the wall idea for the flying kind. Provide
at the
entry a trough with soapy water beneath a screen which is large
enough to
drop the beetles through the screen but small enough for the
bees to
transverse. At least one will catch some of them.
For whatever it's worth department
Happy cell reduction and beetle battle
