In years past I have placed
one inch of the blue Styrofoam under the
inner cover during winter [it used to be common practice here,
then we
had several warm winters and we all decided it wasn't necessary]
Back
then, we provided an upper entrance. I never noticed the foam
being
chewed.
This year I used two inches
of foam with plywood on the each side in a 2
1/2 frame. Aluminum on top, no upper entrance, it seems to be
working
great so far.

I have no experience with candy so cannot reply from experience.
I have
observed bees using crystallized honey, will suck out the liquid
part and
leave the crystals behind. Bees must have water to use the crystals
whether from candy or honey.
