You really do have a nasty
wet climate! I thought I was badly off last
winter when I had to leave the digging for three months due to
waterlogging.
How strong are your colonies? Could they be too weak to keep
the slugs at
bay? I've had the odd one or two in a hive when I used solid
bottom boards;
have you tried OMF's?
A breeze block is a concrete
block used for building. They're easily
available in the UK at no cost (we use brick and concrete for
most buildings,
I think you use a lot more wood in the States?) and two on edge
on a
two-foot-square concrete slab make a good makeshift hive stand,
about nine
inches or so high. It's not ideal since it would save my back
if I raised the
hives another six inches or so.
