Hello all - When I started a couple of hives last year on 4.9 starter strips, I used swarms for this purpose. These bees built comb from the strips that mainly had cells measuring 5.2 mm. These 2 swarms came from hives that had 5.4 mm worker cell size. After 2 brood cycles, I shook down these hives again onto 4.9 foundation, which they managed to draw out pretty good from brood use. My question, is there a maximum range of cell size that a queen can/will lay in? Since these queens went from laying in 5.4 mm cell size to 4.9 mm cell size, I wonder if the queens had previously been on 5.6 mm cell size if they would have any problem using the 4.9 size. Would there have to be a supercedure along the way or not. Regards, Barry |
