Hello to all and especially
to Imker and Eric:
A Bushel and a Peck are volume
measurement in English measurements similar
to Liters and Cubic Centimeters. However 4 Pecks equal one Bushel.
In the
United States farmers use the Bushel more to disclose the amount
of their
harvest with grains per acre. The Peck has all but disappeared
unless you
deal with berry crops such as Blueberries, Blackberries and Raspberries.
In the context of what was being described I believe the writer
was trying
to convey the size of the swarm of Honeybee's size. It deals
with the
comparison of a Soccer ball or a Basketball. While one is smaller
than
another the image is clearer to the reader that is just what
the writer
wants to convey. The unit of measure is of Bushel and Peck is
very old and
still used but is still overlooked by those who use the Metric
System. Or
for those who have converted to the Metric system like Great
Britain and
Europe as a whole. The whole method of measurement was introduced
to me in
my Elementary school days in the 1960's. Most of my classmates
and myself
struggled to work things out in the word problems for arithmetic,
not math,
for practical use of figures.
Respectfully Submitted
