What is the latest reasonable time of year to split a hive?

Our last huge flow is golden rod just before frost but here its non stop
production all spring/summer/fall the first starts before the snow is off
with skunk gabbage (I still wonder if it tastes gross or not but hoping I
never find out). Workers still produce after the frost but we wouldnt want
that bitter stuff.
