Thanks. Is there any relationship
between the amount of eggs laid by the
queen (per day) and the amount of pollen gathered? Especially
when compared
with small cells vs. larger? In other words can colonies on 4.9
brood up
more quickly because larger amounts of pollen?
>From ABJ, 1927, pg 492
quoted on Carniolians:
"The carniolans are not
so quite on the comb as the Italians, but fully as
gentle. When I open a hive, as many as a dozen may fly at my hands
or face,
but they hardly ever sting-simply touch with their antennae as
if curious,
and fly back to the hive. They never rob or drift, but resist
robbers
well. They build up faster than Italians and are ready to swarm
a week or ten
days sooner. They build more queen cells and will swarm more
if left
alone.Sometimes a queen will not be satisfied with two hive bodies,
but
starts to fill the third with brood, when kept in Langstroth
hives.
They fly farther than Italians and are usually the first to find
new sources
of honey....They keep the colony up to honey-gathering strength
later in the
season.
The above is cut from where
we discussed carniolan characteristics on bio
system. Here it is stated to keep carnies (also caucasians if
one goes to
Barry's BB) on at least 2 if not 3 hive bodies correct? It also
states at
the BB that these bees on small cells can fly freely at 45 degrees.
Question: Because of the large brood nest and the ability to
fly at cooler
temps. would this allow for earlier pollen collection, thus a
possible
earlier season (depending on weather) than on larger size cells?
Clay- thinking thoughts of
pollen!
